Director, Science Programs Society for Women's Health Research


Dr. Irene Aninye is the Director of Science Programs at the Society for Women’s Health Research, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving women’s health through science, policy, and education. She designs programs that focus on women’s health issues, as well as health conditions that affect women and men differently, such as sleep and pain. Her research background is in endocrinology and metabolism, investigating how hormones regulate development, reproduction , and disease. Dr. Aninye has dedicated her career to both academic service and community engagement. She has taught courses and trainings in both science and leadership development for researchers, professionals, and students of all ages and career stages. With a passion to diversify the face of STEM and increase the involvement of underrepresented groups in the sciences, she mentors students and early career scientists, and has provided leadership on multiple education and career development committees and boards of professional societies, universities , and community organizations. A Washington DC native, Irene holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from UMBC and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Integrative Physiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
